Thomas A. Sebeok and biology: Building biosemiotics
نویسنده
چکیده
The paper attempts to review the impact of Thomas A. Sebeok (1920–2001) on biosemiotics, or semiotic biology, including both his work as a theoretician in the field and his activity in organising, publishing, and communicating. The major points of his work in the field of biosemiotics concern the establishing of zoosemiotics, interpretation and development of Jakob v. Uexküll’s and Heini Hediger’s ideas, typological and comparative study of semiotic phenomena in living organisms, evolution of semiosis, the coincidence of semiosphere and biosphere, research on the history of biosemiotics.

Sebeok's Semiosic Universe and Global Semiotics
On the belief that the universe is a semiosic web Sebeok placed no limits on semiotic inquiry as he chose to conduct it. In terms of fields of semiosis and objects of analysis Sebeok’s interests ranged from his studies in biology to his reflections relatively to lingusitics, cybernetics, and artificial intelligence, his musements relatively to narrative esthetic signs, his interest in ecology a...
متن کاملModeling, dialogue, and globality: Biosemiotics and semiotics of self. 2. Biosemiotics, semiotics of self, and semioethics
The main approaches to semiotic inquiry today contradict the idea of the individual as a separate and self-sufficient entity. The body of an organism in the microand macrocosm is not an isolated biological entity, it does not belong to the individual, it is not a separate and self-sufficient sphere in itself. The body is an organism that lives in relation to other bodies, it is intercorporeal a...
متن کاملMEMES VERSUS SIGNS On the use of meaning concepts about nature and culture
Repetition, for a god, is a sign of majesty, necessity' s seal. The title' s question is not in the least meant as jocular. I am not making light about Thomas A. Sebeok' s passing away in 2001. My purpose is to remind semioticians about the void that his passing away left in the theoretical edifice of the discipline. He understood semiotics as a study that simultaneously and with a unified conc...
متن کاملDialogism and biosemiotics
The notions of ‘modeling’ and ‘interrelation’ play a pivotal role in Sebeok’s biosemiotics. In dialogue with Thomas A. Sebeok’s doctrine of signs, we propose to inquire into the action of modeling and interrelation in biosemiosis over the planet Earth, developing the concept of interrelation in terms of ‘dialogism’. Indeed, in the light of Sebeok’s biosemiotics we believe that the concept of di...
متن کاملInteractivist naturalization of biosemiotics and Peircean semeiotic
Intention is to show how the concepts of Peircean semeiotic can be transformed to interactivist ones, and what restrictions this transformation brings along to the application of Peircean concepts especially to biosemiotics. The basic interactive re-interpretation of Peircean semeiotic for biosemiotics can be done with three levels of representation. At the first level, the concept of minimal (...
